IRONY:
an outcome of events contrary to what was, or might have been, expected.
METAPHOR:
a figure of speech in which a term or phrase is applied to something to which it is not literally applicable in order to suggest a resemblance
STEREOTYPE:
to give a fixed form to.
ALLUSION:
An instance of indirect reference
PERSONIFICATION:
an imaginary person or creature conceived or figured to represent a thing or abstraction.
SYMBOLISM:
the practice of representing things by symbols, or of investing things with a symbolic meaning or character.
EXAMPLES FROM THE BOOK:
STEREOTYPE:
*All Jews are are useless.
This is a stereotype because not al Jews are useless, some could be very successful Docters, lawyers, or bankers. Not every Jew was useless.
*If Hitler got the children to trust him everyone would.
This is a stereotype because just because the children followed him did not mean that everyone would. Most of the adults would probably not listen to there children.
SYMBOLISM:
*Corrie and her family referred to the Jews they were hiding as "the watches".
This is and example of symbolism because the watches were a symbol for the Jews, that way if anyone overheard what they were saying, no one would expect a thing.
*Nollie referred to the secret room as "the closet".
When Nollie sent Corrie a letter after she was released, she said closet instead of secret room because that way if any of the Germans read it, they would not know anything about the secret room.
ALLUSION:
*While in the concentration Betsie had a vision of what the house, that all of the outgoing prisoners were going to live in, was going to look like. It was going to have flowers, inlaid wood floors inside, a broad gallery around a central hall, and bas-refief statues set along the walls.
This is an example of an allusion because Betise saw something that was going to happen in the future.
*Corrie had a vision in the beginning of her and her family being taken away by the German soldiers in a bus.
This is an example of an allusion because she was seeing something that happened before it actually happened. Alex - The definitions are fine. The rest of the assignment is not complete. Please reread the directions.

Assignment #2 Internal Conflict: in literature and drama, a struggle which takes place in the characters mind and through which the character reaches a new understanding or dynamic change.
Major Character: Corrie
Peter, her favorite cousin, was taken by the soldiers, what if she never saw him again.
Before letting Mary stay with them, Corrie probably debated wether or not she would make to much noise because of her asthma, and accidently end up exposing them.
Corrie probably wanted to tell the Germans where the Jews were so they would stop hitting her, but she knew she had to keep her friends safe so she took the slapping from the Germans.
Corrie had some tough decisions to make. She had to decide between what she knew was right and her safety. When Mary asked to join them, I bet she knew that she wanted her to stay but she had to risk her safety because of her asthma. She also had to decide between keeping her friends safe and making the German soldier stop hitting her. She chose what she knew was right and kept her friends safe. When she heard that her favorite cousin was arrested for playing the national anthem, she probably wanted to run up to a German and ask to see her cousin but she knew she would get in major trouble so she kept her mouth shut.
Minor Character: Peter
Before he played the national anthem, peter probably wondered if he should play it and possible get in troube, or play it safe and not play it at all.
Peter probably wondered if it was a good idea or not to go over to the Beje and play church songs. He had already been caught once for playing at a church so I bet he was scared to play these songs again.
(I do not know of any more.)
Peter had to pick between what he wanted to do and what he knew was right. He had a decision to make and he decided to do what he wanted, he played the national anthem. He suffered the consequences and was discovered by the Germans and brought to a prison.
External Conflict: in literature, a struggle between the character and another character against nature or some outside force.
Major Character: Corrie
Corrie was slapped by a German soldier for not telling him where she was hiding the Jews.
Corrie had to get Mary into the secret room before the Germans reached her room. She said it was difficult because she had to half shove half drag Mary and get back to her bed in time.
The Germans grabbed Corrie and draged her to the bus to who knows where.
Corrie took some abuse from the Germans to save her friends and also risked her own safety to save Mary. When the Germans were coming up the stairs, Mary had not yet made it into the secret room so Corrie got up and shoved her inside and got back into bed before the Germans made it up the stairs. She also lied to the Germans about the Jews she was hiding and took the slapping from the Germans for her friends. She was also was shoved onto a bus and sent to a prison for her Jewish friends.
Minor Character: Peter
Peter was taken by the German soldiers for playing the national anthem on the piano because it was forbidden.
When Corrie's family was being taken to the bus, Peter was forced by the Germans to follow. He was shoved into the bus to be taken to a prison once more.
(I do not know any more.)
Peter had the chance to do what he wanted to do and risk his safety or follow the rules. He chose to do what he wanted and ended up getting into trouble. I think Peter has a lot of courage to do what he did. He played the national anthem and ended up being arrested for doing an innocent thing.
GOOD - YOUR EXPLANATIONS FOR INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL CONFLICTS FOR PETER ARE VERY SIMILAR. WHILE A CONFLICT CAN BE BOTH, A BETTER EXPLANATION OF WHY YOU FELT THAT WAY WOULD HELP.
Assignment #3
Hitler had the young people indoctrinated into Nazism because he figured that if the young people of Germany believed it would become a brainwash and everyone would listen to Hitler. Hitler brainwashed the kids because when he took over the world he would have a ton of people who thought of him as a god. Because of this their childrens children would believe in Hitler and his number of believers would continue to grow rapidly. This way no one would turn on Hitler and he would continue to rule the world with or without the United States. EXACTLY!
Assignment #4 Scapegoat: a person or group made to bear the blame for others or to suffer in their place.
A scapegoat applies to The Hiding Place because the Jews are the Germans scapegoats. The Jews get blamed for all of Germany's economic problems even though the Jews have done nothing to hurt Germany.
Bandwagon: a party, cause, movement, etc., that by its mass appeal or strength readily attracts many followers
The Nazi Party is the bandwagon in The Hiding Place, when Hitler started the Nazi Party it quickly gained popularity and continued to grow rapidly. From the beginning to the end these people kept joining the Nazi Party. AND MANY TIMES, THEY HAD NO CHOICE. IF THEY DIDN'T AT LEAST PRETEND TO GO ALONG WITH IT, THEY MIGHT LOOSE THEIR FREEDOM OR THEIR LIFE.
